Makarora River

Mouth of the Makarora into Lake Wanaka

The Makarora River is a river in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand.

Its source is in the Mount Aspiring National Park on the southern flank of the Southern Alps near the Haast Pass, which forms the watershed between the valleys of the Makarora and Haast River. The Makarora flows south, passing the place Makarora and empties into the northern end of Lake Wanaka. The river is used for fishing and jet boating.

Especially in middle and lower reaches of the river is a braided river. The State Highway 6 follows the left bank.
