Makaryev

Makarjew (Russian Макарьев ) is a small town in Kostroma Oblast (Russia) with 7274 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Unschaniederung about 180 kilometers east of the Oblasthauptstadt Kostroma on the right bank of the Unscha, a left tributary of the Volga.

Makarjew is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The city lies 50 kilometers south of Neja where the original route, which opened on this section 1906 Trans-Siberian Railway ( Route 598 km from Moscow) runs.

History

1439 was the later canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church as a miracle worker Macarius (Russian Макарий / Makari; 1349-1444 ) founded at the Unscha a hermitage, which later became a major monastery ( was from the 17th century until 1929 the status of Lavra ).

In order that the monastery was the trade settlement ( Sloboda ) Makarjewskaja. This received its town charter in 1778 under the name Makarjew -na- Unsche ( Makarjew at the Unscha ) to avoid confusion with the same name on the Volga (now Makarjewo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ) to avoid. There Makarios had in 1435 also founded a monastery.

In the 19th century, the city was known for taking place three times a year markets: the Epiphaniasmarkt in winter, the Annunciation market in the spring of Elijah and the market in the summer.

Since the end of the 19th century is called the city only Makarjew.

Culture and sights

In Makarjew are the Makarios - Unscha Monastery ( Макарьев - Унженский монастырь / Makarjew - Unschenski monastyr ) from the 17th to the 18th centuries as well as the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral ( собор Александра Невского / Sobor from Alexander Nevsky ) of 1905. City has a local history museum.
