Makasae ( Macasae, Makasai, Makassai, Makassae, Macassai, Ma'asae ) is a Papuan language in East Timor. She is the mother tongue of 101 854 people (2010) in the eastern parts of the districts Viqueque ( 28,000 ) and Baucau ( 62,000 ) and in the western parts of the district loud ( 12,000 ). Here, especially in the towns of Baucau, Baguia, Laga, Quelicai ( Baucau district ), Ossu (District Viqueque ) Ililai and Luro (District loud ). Also living in the state capital over 3,500 Makasae spokesman. Makasae is thus one of the most widely spoken languages in the country. It is one of the 15 national languages recognized by the Constitution of East Timor.

Makasae is related to its neighbors Papua Fataluku and Makalero. In Ethnologue Makalero is even seen as a dialect of Makasae. Generally, it is assumed that the Melanesians 3000 BC migrated to Timor, and BC were displaced by later ones Austronesian groups from 2500 partially. In the meantime Fataluku one suspects that they may be released after the Austronesians from the East Timor reached and instead these displaced or assimilated. Even with the Makasae speculation about such a scenario.

In Luro two different forms of Makasae are spoken. While in sub - Luro is called the actual Makasae ( Naini ), in Upper Luro the dialect Sa'ane ( Sa'ani ) is used. Part of it is also regarded as a separate language.

The dialect in Ossu plays a special role in the maintenance of its consonants p, which in the other dialects to a f was (examples: the word for 'we', ' pi ' in Ossu, , fi ' in Baucau, the word for stone ': , apa ' in Ossu, afa ' in Baucau ).

The nickname for the inhabitants of the East of East Timor, Firaku ' may be a word from the Makasae: , fi raku ' means we comrades '. But there is also the theory that the Portuguese Firaku vira o cu ( someone turn your back) is derived, which probably refers to the slope of the Eastern Timorese rebellion.
