Makassar (people)

The Makassar Makassar or are an ethnic group in the south of the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi. They gave their name to the capital of the province of Makassar. They speak the Macassar language, a language of the Austronesian language family.

From the 13th century they founded several small kingdoms in the region. End of the 17th century, it fell gradually under Dutch control. Their northern neighbors are the Bugis.
