Makedonski Brod

Makedonski Brod [ ˌ makɛdɔnski brɔd ] ( Macedonian Cyrillic: Македонски Брод; short and M. Brod, to German as: Macedonian ford ) is a town in western Macedonia with 3740 inhabitants, situated on the banks of the Treska. The town is the seat of Opština named after her, which includes 50 more villages and a total of over 7100 inhabitants.

Geographical location

Makedonski Brod is located in a valley of the Treska, a tributary of the Vardar, at an altitude 530-610 meters. In the north, the highlands Pesjak the Buševa and in the east the Dautica rises in the south. The city is the center of the pretty sparsely populated region Poreče which extends from Skopje to Kičevo. Through a side valley east of the city to get into the wide plain of Prilep.

Climate

The climate is continental character due to the mountainous conditions. The winters are cold and rainy and the summers are hot and low precipitation.

Population

The city of Makedonski Brod has 3740 inhabitants, almost all of them Orthodox Macedonians. Of the 7141 inhabitants in the Opština are 6927 Orthodox Macedonians, and there are 181 Muslim Turks. 33 inhabitants still belong to other ethnic groups.

History

In antiquity, the area was inhabited by the Romans. In the village of Krapa northeast of the city, a Roman grave stone was found. Later the Slavic tribe of the Berziten immigrated.

At the site of the present city has always stood a bridge connecting the west with Kičevo Prilep in the southeast.

Near the village Devič in the north ruins of many buildings were found, which is to judge that there existed a settlement that served as the center for the entire region. Not far from these ruins is the Pešna Cave, which is in the interior up to 30 meters high and belongs to an up to 10 kilometers long cave system.

1445 Battle of Mokra between Skanderbeg and the Ottoman armies army took place in the vicinity which ended with the victory of the League of Lezha.
