Makemo, Rangi - kemo or Te Paritua, is the fourth- largest atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago. The atoll is 70 km long and between 7 to 17 km wide and covers about 845 square kilometers.

Geography

Numerous Motus the atoll located along the north side of the atoll. They have a dense vegetation. The Riffkranz in the south has now closed, but without Motus. The large lagoon has two navigable entrances. Passe Arikitamiro ( Passe Puheva ) is just east of the main town in the east of the atoll.

Eight kilometers northwest of the municipal seat is the airfield opened in 1976 by ​​Makemo. There is a school for 150 children who come from the surrounding atolls. The municipality consists of the atolls Makemo Makemo, Haraiki, Marutea North, Katiu, Tuanake, Hiti, Tepoto Sud, Raroia, Takume, Taenga and Nihiru.

Legend

Makemo is considered the birth place of the legendary hero Moeava. Legend has it that this was the island queen of Tepukamaruia, Huarei, in love. The giant Patira, however, was also in love with the Queen, and it came to a fight between the two to Huarei on the island Makemo. Moeva reached the atoll as the first, killing his opponent, after the god Tu worshiped for assistance. He threw a large rock, which he formed before the arrival of his opponent. 's Head Patiras This stone, which can still be visited today, bears the name Moeva.

History

Makemo was discovered on October 10, 1802 by John Turnbull. He gave the island the name " Phillips Iceland ", inspired by a Sheriff of London, Sir Richard Phillips. On some cards, the atoll is, however, also recorded under the name " Kutuzov ".

Economy

Today ( 2011) live the inhabitants of pearl farming and tourism. Besides the legendary rock Moeva and a Walheiligtum, you can visit which replaces the old lighthouse from the Atoll Fakarava the town's lighthouse.
