The Makerere University, shortly MAK, is Uganda's first university in the capital Kampala. With a student population of over 30,000 it is one of the largest in East and Central Africa.

History

The Makerere University in 1922 was initially a vocational school. In January of the same year it was renamed the "Uganda Technical University ". 14 students there began to learn carpentry, construction and mechanics. The university offered soon various other courses: medical treatment, agriculture, animal sciences and teacher education.

Starting in 1937, the University, to develop into an institution of higher education and offered to post-school qualifications. In 1949 it became a university in the true sense, with a special reference to the University of London. She soon became a university for the whole of eastern Africa, with courses in which the general purpose financial statements of the University of London could be acquired.

With the establishment of the University of East Africa on June 29, 1963 ended the period of the special relationship with the University of London, and degrees from the University of East Africa could be purchased. On 1 July 1970, Makerere became an independent national university of the Republic of Uganda. It offered courses and postgraduate courses leading to its own awards.

Organization

The University is located on Makerere Hill, one of the many hills on which is Uganda's capital Kampala. The main campus is approximately 5 km north-west from the city center, and covers an area of two square kilometers.

The MAK is a Vice- Chancellor, who is assisted by two Deputy Vice- Chancellors, passed. She has nine colleges and a law school, which are divided into more schools and institutes:
