Makokou

Province

The city is the capital of the province Makokou Ogooué- Ivindo in Gabon. Their height above sea level is 308 m. The population in 2004 was about 16,600.

The city lies on the River Ivindo and on the National Road N4. Its growth created by the surrounding iron mines and is adjacent to the Ivindo National Park.

Railway

A branch of the Transgabonais was originally planned terminus in Makokou, but the planned route was rejected for political reasons again, as the price of iron from the nearby iron mine fell. However, there are plans ready the line is being expanded in 2006 to tap the to other mines in Mbala, Cameroon. A new deep-water port in Santa Clara would be part of this project.
