Makoto Ozone

Makoto Ozone (Japanese小 曽 根 真, Makoto Ozone, born March 25, 1961 in Kobe ) is a Japanese jazz pianist.

Life and work

Ozone started by its own account very early with the music education; he has played with two years Hammond organ and improvised age of seven. Between 7 and 9 years, he joined with his father, Minoru ( also pianist ) on television. After he heard albums by Oscar Peterson, he moved at age 12 to the piano. Even in high school he performed with a professional big band. From 1980 he studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston jazz composition and arrangement. With appearances in the Boston area, he also played with Gary Burton and took 1982 as a duo with Phil Wilson. In 1983 he released his first album, " Makoto Ozone" at CBS ( with Burton and Eddie Gomez ) on which he played his own compositions. In 1983, he toured the world with the Quartet by Gary Burton, on the albums " Real Life Hits" and " Whiz Kids" he plays. Next he took on with Chuck Loeb, Marc Johnson and Paquito D' Rivera and put 1986 in front of his second album " After". In 1989 he returned to Japan and recorded for JVC. In 1994 Verve released his first solo album " Breakout". In 1996 he won with the trio album "The Trio " (with John Scofield ) the prize as the best Japanese Jazz Album of the Japanese "Swing Journal". Partners were Kiyoshi Kitagawa (bass) and Clarence Penn ( drums), he on the "Floating Jazz Festival " on the " SS Norway " met. Her follow-up album " Dear Oscar" ( Oscar Peterson ) won the award for Best Japanese Jazz Album in 1998. In Japan, he also had his own radio show. In 1999 he moved back to New York City; In 1997 he moved to the Montreux Jazz Festival with vocalist Kimiko Itoh, whom he accompanied on their album " Kimiko " which won the award of " Swing Journal " for Japanese jazz singer 2000. April 2002 was with Gary Burton, Michael Brecker, Chick Corea, James Genus and singer Jon Hendricks, the Verve album "Treasure". He worked alongside the jazz intensively with classical music, so in a duo with Gary Burton on " Virtuosi "; In 2003, he played back together with Burton on his album "Generations ".
