Makruh

As makruh (Arabic مكروه, DMG makrooh ) is called in Islam acts whose actions for religious opinion is unpopular and therefore should be avoided. According to Islamic tradition, the Muslim will not be punished for carrying out unpopular actions, but rewarded for their omission, however.

The infamous acts include, for example, the waste of water ( in the domains of ritual ablutions ), and the disregard of popular or preferred actions - both during and outside of religious services.

In general, any excessive action is considered to be unpopular.

Smoking is at least makrooh according to some scholars, while others describe it even as haram.
