The kwacha is the currency of Malawi, it was introduced in 1970. A Kwacha is divided into 100 tambala. Kwacha is Chichewa and means " dawn " or " move"; Tambala means " rooster" (a rooster is the symbol of the Malawi Congress Party, shortly MCP).
The current banknote series to 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 kwacha was issued in 2012. Previously, a series of values from 5 to 200 kwacha in circulation in which all banknotes had a uniformly designed front with the image of John Chilembwe, the backs showed various buildings and typical scenes. The 50 Tambala and 1 kwacha 1971 contained in the first banknote series 1986 were supplemented by coins in the same denomination value; a 2- kwacha banknote was issued only to 1973. Since 2006, also bimetallic coins in denominations of 5 and 10 kwacha in circulation.
There also exist coins of 1, 5 and 10 kwacha.
