Malaya Vishera

Malaya Visher (Russian Малая Вишера ) is a town in the Novgorod Oblast (Russia) with 12,461 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Ilmenniederung about 75 kilometers northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Veliky Novgorod at the Wischerka Malaya ( Malaya also Wischera ), a source river of the opening into the Volkhov Wischera.

Malaya Wischera is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1851 Saint Petersburg- Moscow, the former railway Nikolai ( kilometer 162).

History

Malaya was the Visher 1843 in connection with the construction of the railway Nikolai. The name after the river stands for Small Wischera. 1860 a railroad depot was built and opened one of the first engineering colleges in Russia.

1921 was the awarding of city law.

During World War II Malaya Wischera was occupied on 24 October 1941 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured already on 20 November 1941 by troops of the 52nd Army of the Red Army during the Battle of Tikhvin.

Culture and sights

, 40 km from Malaya Wischera remote village Pechowo stands a wooden church from the 17th century. In the surrounding villages Znamenka, Possochowo Kamenka and country estates have been preserved from the 19th century.

Economy

In Malaya Wischera there is a work for technical glass, an electrical factory and wood processing companies.
