On 8 March 2008, elections were held for the National Assembly ( Dewan Rakyat ), the Parliament of Malaysia.

Parties

To the 222 seats in parliament who applied several parties. Due to the strict majority voting was expected that once again the Barisan Nasional is the strongest force.

The current ruling party UMNO Barisan Nasional of the was led by Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia. The Barisan Nasional is a cited by UMNO multi-ethnic and since its inception the controlling coalition of 14 parties at the time of elections.

The three main opposition parties also came together to form an alliance, Pakatan Rakyat the. Represented in this are the social democratic Democratic Action Party (DAP ), Parti Islam Se strict Islamic party - Malaysia (PAS ) and the National Parti Keadilan Rakyat Justice Party ( Keadilan ) of Anwar Ibrahim on.

Result

The elections on 8 March 2008 won the ruling for more than 50 years National Front ( Barisan Nasional ), but suffered the worst election defeat since 1969. She lost the psychologically important for the BN two-thirds majority allows the constitutional amendments.

The State Parliament in Sarawak did not dissolve. The last elections for the state parliament was on 20 May 2006.
