Malaysian Houses of Parliament

The Bangunan Parlimen Malaysia and Malaysian Houses of Parliament is a building complex that houses the two chambers of the Malaysian Parliament. The building complex is located at the Perdana Botanical Gardens, a large park in the capital Kuala Lumpur, right next to the Malaysian national monument.

Description

The complex consists of two parts, a three-storey main building and a 17-story high-rise. The main building houses the two chambers are Dewan Rakyat ( House of Representatives) and the Dewan Negara (Senate ) housed, while the offices of deputies in high-rise located.

Construction

The construction of the parliament building goes back to a proposal by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister of the Federation of Malaya, in December 1959. The design and execution of the building go to the British Ivor Shipley, an employee of the Malaysian Regierungsbaubehörde back. The construction costs amounted to RM18 million. Construction began in September 1962. The opening of the new Parliament building took place on 21 November in 1963 by the Yang di - Pertuan Agong 3 Tuanku Syed Putra Ibni Syed Hassan Jamalullail. A statue of Tunku Abdul Rahman was erected in the square in front of the Parliament.

Predecessor

September 11, 1959 to the opening of the new parliament building in 1963, the Parliament was housed in Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman. The building located in the city center of Kuala Lumpur, close to the Petronas Towers originally belonged to the rich and famous mines and plantation tycoon Eu Tong Seng. Today, the Malaysia Tourism Centre ( MATIC ) is housed in this historic building.

Cultural reception

In Malaysia the building has a high symbolic value. It also decorated the back of the first, in 1967 issued coin series of the ringgit and 1967-1996 the back of the 1000 ringgit bill.

Moving to Putrajaya

2010, the government introduced a new building in government and administrative center of Putrajaya from this week. Because of the high cost of at least 800 million ringgit and protests from the population of the plan was initially not further addressed.
