Malcolm Archer

Malcolm Archer ( born 1952 in the UK) is a British organist, choirmaster and composer.

Life

Archer went to the King Edward VII and Queen Mary School in Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire to school before studying as a fellow of the Royal College of Organists, London at the Royal College of Music in Kensington, London. His organ teachers included, among others, Ralph Downes, Gillian Weir and Nicolas Kynaston. He studied composition with Herbert Sumsion and Alan Ridout. In the years 1972-1975 he was organ scholar at Jesus College, Cambridge.

Professional life

Archer's first jobs as an organist were at the Bristol Cathedral and the Cathedral of Norwich. From 1996 to 2004 he was organist and Master of the Choristers, the choirboys at the cathedral of Wells. His duties included the training of the members of the choir for the daily worship. He was also the Music Director of the Oratorio Society Wells Cathedral, whose recordings of various concerts found wide acclaim.

2004 Archer went as successor to John Scott until July 2007 as Organist and Director of Music at St Paul's Cathedral in London. Since 2007 he is Director of Chapel Music and Organist at Winchester College, where he teaches organ both the specialist as well as the Winchester College Chapel Choir leads.

Archer was a member of the board of the Royal College of Organists. In 2012, He is a board member of the Salisbury Cathedral and the Guild of Church Musicians.

Compositions

In 2012 there were already more than 200 of Archer compositions in printed form. A special composition was to the Birthday Mass for the 80th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, which was broadcast live on British television BBC 1.
