Malcolm Forbes

Malcolm Stevenson Forbes (often: Malcolm Forbes, Sr., born August 19, 1919 in Englewood, New Jersey; † 24 February 1990 in Far Hills, New Jersey) was an American publisher. From 1957 until his death he has laid founded by his father B. C. Forbes Forbes Magazine.

Professional life and career

Malcolm Forbes was the son of BC and Adelaide Mary ( née Stevenson ) Forbes. After visiting the Laurenceville School, a preparatory school in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Forbes studied at Princeton University. After futile efforts to find a political career - Forbes was in the New Jersey Senate worked and ran from 1951 to 1957 for the governorship of New Jersey - he devoted himself from 1957 entirely to the Forbes Magazine. After the death of his brother Bruce Charles Forbes ( 1964), he took over sole control of the company.

The magazine grew steadily under his leadership, and Forbes diversified the company by, among others, he went into the real estate trade. After his death in 1990, his son Steve Forbes became his successor.

Forbes had an estimated personal fortune of 400 million to 1 billion dollars.

Private life

Forbes was extremely wealthy and opulent lifestyle have been greatly respected by the tabloid press. Among his most famous friends included Elizabeth Taylor, the TV presenter Barbara Walters, the Fiat shareholder Giovanni Agnelli, the politician Robert Maxwell and Henry Kissinger. In later years, Forbes was an avid motorcyclist and used his influence among other things, to move the legislation in New Jersey to release the previously approved only for cars Garden State Parkway for the motorcycle traffic.

Forbes was married since 1946 with Roberta Remsen Laidlaw, from whom he was divorced in 1985. After his death in 1990, the influential gay magazine OutWeek caused a stir with a title report on Forbes alleged homosexuality.
