Malcolm IV of Scotland

Malcolm IV ( Máel Coluim mac Eanric ) (* March 20, 1142; † December 9, 1165 in Jedburgh ) was Scottish king. He was the eldest son of Earl Henry of Scotland († 1152 ) and his wife Ada of Surrey as well as the grandson of King David I.

After the early death of his father Henry Malcolm was determined to inherit his grandfather David. He was crowned in 1153 in Scone. In 1157, he met in Chester with the English king Henry II, where he received a peace treaty and gave up his claim to Cumberland, Westmorland, Northumberland and Carlisle.

Malcolm IV is described as devout, weak and chaste. He died unmarried and childless, which is why it is also called " Malcolm, the Virgin ". About his life in general little is known, but he seems to have been an ineffective monarch. He was the last Scottish monarch with a Scottish name. His younger brother William I followed him to the throne.
