Malcolm Milne

Malcolm Milne ( born November 5, 1948 in Myrtleford, Victoria ) is a former Australian alpine skier. It was 1969, the first Australian to win a World Cup race and won a medal at the world championships.

Biography

Four years after the death of his brother Ross Milne during the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 Milne was in 1968 in Grenoble even his Olympic debut. In downhill skiing, the 19- year-old was driving under 86 starters in 19th place that was until then by far the best result that an Australian had scored in the history of the alpine competitions at the Olympic Winter Games.

In December 1969, Milne won the World Cup downhill race in Val d'Isere. Thus Milne was the first Australian skier, the managed such a success. Three months later he won the bronze medal in the downhill at the World Championships in Val Gardena.

Milne joined for the training of the French national ski team. Between 1970 and 1972 he placed at five World Cup downhill in the top ten and was regarded as one of the favorites for the Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo. Shortly before the Olympics, he retired but in his left knee cartilage injury. Milne still went to the start. By their own words " worst performance of his life ", he landed far behind.

After the Olympics, he moved to the Profiskizirkus, joined a team of Jean -Claude Killy and went mainly for parallel race at the start.

Before the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000 Milne was invited to carry the Olympic torch through his home town of Myrtleford, where he lives with his wife Sherry and his family. In 2004 he was appointed by the Australian Ski Ski & Snowboard Australia honorary member. The Association recorded so from Milnes contribution to the development of winter sports in Australia.
