Maldonado is a department in the south of Uruguay. It is among the most populous in the country. Its capital Maldonado has 62 592 inhabitants (as of 2011) and is one of the major cities of Uruguay.

Geography

Location

The expansion of an area of 4793 km ² comprising the department of Canelones flanked on the west, north and east by Lavalleja Rocha. In the south it is bordered by the Río de la Plata, which merges into Southeast by the Atlantic Ocean. In the southeast there are many lagoons such as Laguna del Sauce, del Diario, Blanca, José Ignacio and Garzón. In the region you will find beautiful trees and mountain chains that keep ready a unique natural environment at the southern tip of the American continent.

Mineral resources

On the Departamentogebiet Pan de Azucar marble deposits are present in the Sierra de Carapé and partially on Arroyo, as well as in Zanja del Tigre at the Ruta 12, which also happens to find dolomite. Other mineral resources are stored in the Mina Chape ( lead and zinc) in the Mina Volcano ( copper) in the Mina La Oriental ( copper and zinc) and in the Mina Apolonia (lead, copper and zinc). History

Originally lived here, among others the Charrúas and Chanaes.
