Maletto

Maletto is a city in the Province of Catania in the Italian region Sicily, with 4017 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Maletto is located 60 km northeast of Catania on the east slopes of Mount Etna. In relation to the population center is Maletto is one of the most elevated places in Sicily and the highest town on Etna. However, the municipality territories of most communities rich on the slopes of Mount Etna to the summit.

The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and livestock.

History

Maletto was founded in 1263 by Manfredi Maletto, Count of Mineo. In the years 1440 and in the 17th century, the village was repopulated after he had been abandoned before.

Attractions

The parish church was built in 1870. The church is dedicated to Saint Sant'Antonio da Padova. The churches of San Michele and Sant'Antonio Abbate date from the 18th century. In the village is a ruin of an old castle.

Events

Maletto is famous for its unique breed of strawberries that have made the village famous. Every year, a ceremony to these strawberries instead, called Sagra delle Fragola ( celebration of strawberries). At this event a huge strawberry cake is made, which is then distributed to all visitors.
