Malheur National Forest

Opened on June 13, 1908 Malheur National Forest is a National Forest in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Oregon in the Blue Mountains. The approximately 6900 km ² area includes not only forests and deserts, lakes and grassland. It starts at about 1200 meters above sea level and reaches up to 2754 m high peak of the Strawberry Mountains. It is named after the river Malheur River.

The National Forest is operated by the United States Forest Service, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 1964, the area around the Strawberry Mountain as Strawberry Mountain Wilderness and in 1984, a region in the east of the area were reported to the Bullrun rock as a monument rock wilderness. Both Wilderness Areas are unaffected by human intervention.

In this forest there is a fungus ( Armillaria ostoyae Armillaria = darker ), which is having an age of 2400 years and an area of ​​about 900 ha and 9 km ² one of the oldest and probably the largest living thing on Earth.
