Maltitol ( E 965, Engl., French maltitol ) is a sugar substitute that is obtained, eg, from corn and wheat starch. Maltitol heard as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, isomalt and erythritol to the group of so-called polyols ( sugar alcohols) and is primarily used in sugar-free and low calorie foods, such as for diabetics. Maltitol is not harmful, but it can have a laxative effect in large quantities and lead to bloating. The maximum daily intake for an adult human is given with about 30-50 g. This step corresponds to about 4-5 " sugar-free " foam kisses.

Maltitol has less of a laxative effect than sorbitol, which is also prepared by hydrogenation of sugared starch solution (more precisely from maltose ). From glucose syrup and maltitol syrup is produced, also a sugar substitute with the same e - number. It serves as a food additive in a variety of low-calorie products such as candies, marzipan and gum. These products contain no other sugars ( mono- or di-saccharides ), these may be awarded as " sugar-free " despite the sweet taste. Do these products even more mono-or disaccharides (eg from fruit) so they can be declared as " no added sugar ".

Maltitol has about 90 % of the sweetening power of sugar and, as with all other sugar alcohols, are declared with a calorie content of 10 kJ / g (compared to sugar is 16.5 kJ / g).
