The Mambilla Plateau is a highland region in Taraba, Nigeria. This highland region is the northern continuation of the Bamenda - Highlands in Cameroon.

The Mambilla Plateau is situated at an average altitude of about 1500 m above sea level, making it the highest altitude plateau in Nigeria. Most of the villages are on hills which are above 1800 m.

Some mountains on the plateau are over 2000 meters high, also the highest mountain with 2419 m of Nigeria, the Chappal Waddi.

The Mambilla Plateau was built on a complex basement. On the plateau are found tertiary basalts and volcanic trachyte above all things.

The Mambilla Plateau extends over a length of 96 km and is up to 40 km wide. It is bordered by a layer stage, which is about 900 meters high in some places. The region covers an area of ​​over 9389 km ². The highest mountain Chappal Waddi is located on the southeast flank.

Location

The Mambilla Plateau is located in the southeast of Taraba, in the administrative area of ​​Sardauna. In the south and east slopes of his Cameroonian border follow.

Climate

Due to the high altitude of the plateau prevails there temperate climate. Daytime temperatures rarely exceed 25 ° C, the plateau, making it the coldest in Nigeria. During the day, strong winds prevail. The rainy season lasts from mid-March to the end of December and is characterized by frequent and heavy rains. The moist winds from the Atlantic rain from here on the flanks of the plateau, resulting in much higher rainfall than in the adjacent lowlands.

Topography

The Mambilla Plateau is hilly with deep gorges. The plateau is almost completely covered with soil, only occasionally occurs on granite.

The plateau is cut by many streams and rivers, the Donga and Taraba have their sources on the Mambilla Plateau.

Vegetation

Grassland dominated, apart from artificially planted forests there is little trees. In the forests of eucalyptus tree is predominant, he was planted on the difficult climatic conditions due to its good adaptability. The variety of green grasses on the plateau forms the basis for livestock.

Settlements

Settlements on the plateau are usually small with a population of 100 to 5,000 people, with the exception of the city Gembu. The latter houses the headquarters of Sardauna Local Government Area. Other important settlements on the plateau are Dorofi, Nguroje, Ndaga Mayo, Wakili Buba, corn Amari, Hainare, Mbamnga, Mayo Sollare, Kilatin, Labbare, Mayo Tolore and Tamnyaund Gembu.
