Mamoru Oshii

Mamoru Oshii (Japanese押 井 守, Oshii Mamoru, born August 8, 1951 in Ōta, Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese film director and writer. He gained international fame mainly by the anime Ghost in the Shell. Style

Mamoru Oshii's films are rather thoughtful as entertaining and show some very cynical worldview. In it, his work is fundamentally different from the older directors such as Hayao Miyazaki and others. Characteristic long shots are almost without action, which are interrupted by very fast-action scenes.

The artistic style of Mamoru Oshii is shaped by the influences of the 1970s. His characters seem more realistic, it waives the strong oversubscription of the eyes and gives each piece a unique look. Expensive, very detailed and especially not static acting backgrounds are combined with relatively dynamic foreground characters. So often the background is stretched or compressed, while the action person talks, which the spoken word is thematically reinforced by the graphic. The plot is driven by dialogue, action sequences tend to occur in the background.

Together with Hisayuki Toriumi he created in 1983 with Dallos the first original video animation.

With Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence Japanese filmmaker was represented in 2004 in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2008 he received for Sukai kurora (English: The Sky Crawlers ) an invitation to compete in the 65th Film Festival of Venice.
