Mamuret-ul-Aziz Vilayet

The Vilayet Mamuretül - Aziz ( Ottoman ولايت معمورة العزيز Vilayet -i Ma'mûretül'aziz ) was the forerunner of today's Ottoman Turkish province of Elazig.

Originally, the territory of the Sanjak of a eyalet Diyarbakir with the center Harput dar. Because Harput well protected by its location, but it was also difficult to access, shifted the local governor at the beginning of the 19th century their residence in the close, but located on the plains small town Mezere. The small town developed rapidly and has been formally proposed in 1834 as the seat of local government. The settlement ( and, in the wake of the Sanjak ) received in 1862 in honor of Sultan Abdulaziz and the name Mamuretül - Aziz. In 1879, the Sanjak was raised to the vilayet.

In 1937 the name was officially changed according to the popular pronunciation in Elazig.
