Mamuša

Mamusha ( Albanian: Mamushë, Serbian Мамуша / Mamusa, Turkish Mamusa ) is a city in Kosovo, the administrative seat of the homonymous municipality. The city lies about 19 ​​km north of Prizren.

History

The founding name of the city Mamusa derives from the Sultan Mahmud II (Turkish Mahmut Paşa II ) who conquered the early 19th century Mamusha. Later, the city was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire and some caravanserais, palaces and mosques were built. During the Ottoman Empire, the Turks settled in the city predominantly from the province of Tokat down.

After the Kosovo war in 1999 80 Turkish soldiers of the Kosovo Force were deployed in Mamusha guarding the city today.

Population

In July 2009, the population was 5,500, of which saw, according to polls, a majority of 95 % as Turks. The remaining 5% are made up of Albanians, Roma and Ashkali. Mamusha making it the only major community in Kosovo, the Turks form the majority of the population.
