Manaf Tlass

Manaf Manaf Tlas or Tlass (* 1964 in al- Rastan in Homs ) is a former Syrian brigadier general.

Life

Manaf Tlas comes from a Sunni family. His father, Mustafa Tlas was 1972-2002 Syrian defense minister and closest confidant of Hafez al -Assad. His son and later President Bashar al -Assad met Manaf Tlas therefore already in his youth know.

2000 Tlas was promoted to officer in the Republican Guard, the Syrian elite unit to protect the president. Later, he was right in the rank of Brigadier- General Maher al -Assad, the brother of the President assumed.

According to media reports Tlas was made in May 2011 under house arrest because he reportedly refused to bomb civilian areas. In summer 2012 he managed to flee via Turkey to Paris.
