Manchester Cathedral

The Manchester Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Manchester. It is the hl. Mary, the Holy. Dionysius and St.. Dedicated to George.

History

At the site of the present cathedral, there was probably already in the 8th century a church. The successor building stood until the early 15th century. The current church was built from 1421 to 1506 as the Collegiate Church of a priest's College; the nave was built from 1465 to 1481. In the 16th century religious building in the wake of the Reformation, the Anglican parish church of Manchester was.

As a rapidly enlarged by the industrial revolution in the 19th century, Manchester, in 1847 the church was raised to cathedral of the new diocese of Manchester. Since then, there have been virtually no modifications in the interior, only repair and restoration work. These included that of 1864 due to disrepair worn tower was rebuilt in 1868 in the same shape, but slightly higher. In December 1940, German bombs destroyed the majority of the Northeast of the Cathedral; the restoration came in 1941 until 1960.

Specifications

The cathedral is built mainly in the late Gothic Perpendicular. In the tower, which is built out of the church in the West, you will find a fan-vaulted ceiling. The flat roof of the nave is supported by seven crossbeams on which carved wooden musical angels are attached ( with musical instruments of the 15th century ).

The "Chapter house", the chapter house, built in the 15th century on the south side of the choir as Oktogonbau. In the early 16th century, between the chapter house and the eastern end of the south aisle the "Jesus Chapel", built in the Jesus Chapel of the family Bexwicke.

In the north of the choir, which occupies about half of the total length of the cathedral, in 1513, the St. John 's Chapel, the Chapel of St.. John the Baptist, built in thanksgiving for the victory of the English over the Scots as a regimental band. Since 1936, Chapel of the Manchester Regiment, was badly damaged in 1940 and then restored.

The chancel is the Lady Chapel ( Mary's Chapel ); it was also destroyed in the bombing in 1940 and rebuilt after.

1891 one input to the western nave south wall was created. The entrance to the cathedral in the western part of the nave north wall, the " Victoria porch ", was built in 1897 by architect Basil Champneys.

  • The 1940 destroyed glass window in the west were redesigned by Anthony Hollaway: In 1973, he created the Georg window right next to the West Entrance, 1976 Denysfenster the left of the west entrance, 1980, the Marie window on the west side of the tower, in 1991, the creation of windows and 1995 revelation window, both also in the west of the church.

  • The chapter house is wall painting of the 20th century, including a fashionably dressed Christ.

Choir stalls

The organ was up in 1957 by the organ builders Harrison & Harrison (Durham ) in 1952, as a replacement for an instrument that was built in 1871 by the organ builders Hill & Son, and was destroyed in 1940 during a bombing. In the present instrument, however, is still whistling material incorporated from the previous instrument. Over time, the instrument was modified several times and added a number of high- register. The organ has 89 registers, four manuals and pedal today. The pedal is divided; the registers are partially swellable. The play and Registertrakturen are electro. Currently, there are plans organ from the 15th century to build a new instrument in the historic organ case of the Chancel.
