Mandal Church

The Evangelical Lutheran Mandal kirke ( Mandal Church) is a wooden church in Mandal, Vest- Agder in Fylke, Norway. It is equipped with 1800 seats, the largest wooden church and one of the largest wooden building in Norway. The church was named after the great fire of Mandal, in 1810, built and inaugurated in 1821. Before the fire, a stone church from the 15th century stood on the old market square, where there was the former city center.

Architecture

The church was built by architect Jørgen Gerhard loose in the Empire style, which is attributable to the classicism. This style emphasizes the purity and simplicity with models of Greek and Roman architecture. In addition, it is Norway's first monumental building after independence from Denmark. The walls consist of a fanned out with bricks truss and although they have only a wood paneling, count the church to the wooden buildings. The spans of timber construction are unusually large sized and well executed. Due to the simple style of architecture, the interior received a few embellishments. This is divided by two colossal rows of columns in the nave and two aisles, through which runs a U-shaped gallery. This contrasts with the cross on the altar, the pulpit is cylindrical. The baptismal font is made of marble.

Organ

The organ was installed in 1923 and comes from the organ builder Oscar Wacker ( W. Sauer, Frankfurt / Oder). It is a pneumatic organ with 1500 pipes and 32 votes.
