Mandalay ( Burmese: မန္တလေးမြို့, pronunciation: [ màndəlé mjo ] ) is a city in central Myanmar ( Burma) at a bend of the Irrawaddy River. With nearly 1.6 million residents Mandalay to Yangon is the second largest city in the country. Mandalay has an international airport, the Mandalay International Airport. Connections are made to Rangoon by road, rail and ship.

Geography

Mandalay is located on the Irrawaddy River about 716 km north of Yangon. Mandalay was built by King Mindon in 1857 in an open area on the banks of the Irrawaddy and that an ancient prophecy follow -performing, that at this point for 2400. Anniversary of the Buddhist faith a city would arise.

History

Economy

Due to its strategic location on the transit traffic corridor between South China and the Indian Ocean, the city's importance has been further strengthened as an important commercial center of Burma. The opening of the Yangon- Mandalay Expressway in December 2010, in a convenient position was further improved.
