Mandeville, Jamaica

Mandeville is the capital of Manchester Parish, a district in Middlesex County in Jamaica. With estimated about 48,300 inhabitants ( 2010) it is now Jamaica's fifth largest city.

The city is located on a plateau in the interior to 629 m, about 100 km west of the capital, Kingston. The city is the seat in 1907, founded and operated by the Seventh- day Adventist Private Northern Caribbean University.

History

The city, founded in 1816 was named the eldest son of the Duke of Manchester to Viscount Mandeville, who was then governor of Jamaica.

A strong growth spurt the city received in 1957 with the opening of the Kirkvine works near Williams Field by the Alcan Bauxite Company. Mandeville could benefit from the settlement of migrant workers.
