Mandulis

Mandulis, also Merwel or Menerwel, is a solar deity of Lower Nubia.

Mythology

A particular compound had Mandulis with Isis, who had one of her temple at Philae. Even the Greek historian Strabo wrote: In addition to Isis was worshiped at Philae a large, colorful falcon as a reflection of the soul of Horus and Ra, which is to be flown in from Ethiopia. Here is meant sure Mandulis.

Representation

Shown is Mandulis as a falcon god Horus as or in human form with a crown, combined with ostrich feathers, ram's horns, solar disk and uraeus.

Places of worship

His main cult was the Kalabsha temple, where you have shown him as a young god with lock of youth.

Pharaoh Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II and his two queens Cleopatra " sister " and Cleopatra " the wife " extended the Kalabsha temple for the local " sky Lord, sun god and son of Zeus ( Horus ) " Mandulis. At the annual cult journey of Isis at Philae Nubia through these regularly visited the temple of Mandulis.

Although the Roman Emperor Augustus has never visited this temple, he built it again and attach a large part of the reliefs. Many of them show him offering sacrifices for Mandulis, Isis and other gods.
