Manfred Bietak

Manfred Bietak ( born October 6, 1940 in Vienna) is an emeritus professor of Egyptology at the University of Vienna from 1973 to 2009 Head of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Cairo, as well as head of the Special Research Project SCIEM 2000.

Life

Manfred Bietak studied archeology in Vienna. From 1961 to 1965 he participated in the UNESCO campaign to save the Nubian antiquities in Sayala. In the years 1966-2009 Manfred Bietak his excavations at Tell el- Dab'a ( Avaris ). From 1969 to 1978 he was the excavation director on the West Bank.

In the eastern Nile Delta, he has identified, among others, the Hyksos capital Avaris and Pi -Ramesses Ramesses City. Particularly significant was the excavation of a palace from the Tuthmosidenzeit with Minoan wall paintings. This was probably part of the great military and naval station of Thutmose III. and Amenhotep II

From 1966 to 1981 he held the position of Chief Scientific Secretary of the Culture Section of the Austrian Embassy in Cairo. In 1973 he was assistant professor and since then the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Cairo. 1981 ao. Univ. -Prof. and 1989, Univ. -Prof. at the University of Vienna. 1997 and 2006 he was a visiting professor at the Collège de France, in 2004 at Harvard University, from March 1, 1999 First Speaker of the Special Research Project "Synchronisation of Civilisations in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Second Millennium BC" ( SCIEM 2000) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences the Fund for Scientific research ( FWF). Since November 2004 he has been Head of the Vienna Institute of Archaeological Sciences, University of Vienna. 2008 Bietak was awarded the Cardinal Innitzer price.

Bietak is member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, full member of the German Archaeological Institute, Membre de l' Institut d' Égypte titulaire, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, Foreign Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, Foreign Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Science in Göteborg, Correspondant de l' Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres (June 2010) and Honorary member of the Archaeological Institute of America.

2010 Got Bietak on World Heritage Day the Heritage ICOMOS organization of the Republic of Egypt an honorary medal for his research achievements in Tell el- Dab'a in the eastern Nile Delta.

Manfred Bietak is the author of 14 books and about 200 articles and reports in scientific anthologies and magazines.
