Manfred Matuschewski

Manfred Matuschewski ( born September 2, 1939 in Upper Weimar ) is a German track and field athlete and Olympian, who was starting for the GDR successful in the 1960s in the 800 -meter run. He was twice in a row, 1962 and 1966, European champion. His victory in 1962 was the first gold medal for the GDR athletes (then within a common German team ). Because of its multiple decided only at the finish line wins, he has been called " millimeter- runner" ( "Millimeter - Matu " ) known.

Life

Manfred Matuschewski was discovered in 1956 at the apprentice sports as track and field talent. After he had previously only played field hockey, he ran as a 18 -year-old in the 800 -meter run at once a time of 1:57,8 min. Four years later, in 1960, he was sixth at the Olympic Games in Rome. For the victory at the European Championships in 1962, he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

1960 to 1966 and 1969 he was East German champion in the 800 -meter run, 1969, he was also GDR Champion in the 1500 meter run ( 3:46,0 min). Participation in the 1968 Olympic Games he missed by a kidney stone.

On July 23, 1963, he ran in Potsdam a world record in the 4x1500 -meter run ( 14:58,0 min; together with Jürgen May, Siegfried Herrmann and Siegfried Valentin).

Manfred Matuschewski competed for the SC Turbine Erfurt and trained with Dr. Manfred Ewald Mertens and tear. In its competition time, he was 1.76 m tall and 64 kg. In 1970 he was awarded " for many years of outstanding performance and exemplary work in the athletics team of the German Democratic Republic " with the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

After an apprenticeship as a machinist Manfred Matuschewski began to study engineering and later became a qualified sports teacher and worked as a coach since 1970. 1975 to 1985 he was head coach for middle and long distance running in the GDR Athletics Association DVFL.

Later, he was a liaison between the GDR sports association DTSB and sports medicine. Because of involvement in doping operations, he received an order of punishment after 1990. After his release, he worked for a sports equipment company.
