Manfred Milinski

Manfred Milinski Michael ( born February 8, 1950 in Oldenburg ) is a German biologist and university lecturer.

Life

Milinski studied biology and mathematics at the University of Bielefeld and at the Ruhr- University Bochum. After obtaining a diploma in 1978, he received his doctorate in Bochum Dr. rer. nat. with the work of the Experimental Analysis of hunting three spiny stickleback ( Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) on prey swarm. In 1985 he was there his habilitation with a thesis on the behavioral ecology of competition. After a stay as visiting professor at the University of Bergen, he went on a scholarship from the Heisenberg program of research at the Oxford University.

In 1987 he Milinski a chair at the University of Bern, where he perceived a professor of Vertebrate Biology, and Director of the Zoological Institute was. Since 1999 he has been a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön. Since 2000, Milinski is also an honorary professor at the University of Kiel.

Milinski was admitted in 2004 a member of the Faculty of 1000 and 2010 in the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Research priorities

The research priorities of Milinski lie on ethology and evolutionary economics. Sometimes he carries out interdisciplinary research among other things, the economist Bettina Rockenbach.

Milinski, among other things known for its stickleback experiment, in which he offered in an aquarium sticklebacks two food sources. The quality of the food sources changed over time by many different Daphnia were added per time as feed into the basin. He was able to observe that a distribution of sticklebacks stopped on the two food sources, so that each animal at any time received the same amount of food. He was able to illustrate the principle of the ideal - free distribution on habitats.
