Manfred Rühl

Manfred Rühl ( born December 31, 1933, Nuremberg, Germany) is a German social scientist with the teaching and research focus on communication science and social theory.

Study, teaching, research

Even before the Abitur examination he received a scholarship to attend a high school in Dayton, Ohio for the school year 1950/51. He completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk and worked as a journalist for newspapers, magazines and radio. After studying economics, politics, and communication sciences and sociology and philosophy at the University of Erlangen and the Free University of Berlin and the University of Economic and Social Sciences Nuremberg Rühl obtained in 1960 a master degree in economics. Since 1964 he has worked as a research assistant to Franz Ronneberger the Institute of Political and Communication, University of Erlangen- Nuremberg, where he received his doctorate in 1968 with a thesis on the newspaper office as an organized social system. In 1978 a PhD degree in communication science with Scripture journalism and society. The academic year 1969/70 spent Ruehl as " Scholar in Residence " at the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania. From 1970 to 1976 he is project manager at the Social Sciences Research Centre, University of Erlangen- Nuremberg and member of the DFG Collaborative Research Centre 22 " socialization and communication research ". In 1973/74 he held a chair of journalism at the Institute of Journalism at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.

In 1976, Manfred Rühl Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Hohenheim (Stuttgart ), where he organized the first postgraduate course for journalism in the German language area. In 1983 he moved to the Chair of Communication Studies with an emphasis in journalism at the Otto -Friedrich- University of Bamberg. There he became Professor Emeritus in 1999. In the summer semester 1980 and winter semester 1993, he had taken a visiting professor at the University of Zurich.
