Manfred Rulffs

Manfred Rulffs ( born March 6, 1935 in Kiel, † January 15, 2007 in Ratzeburg ) was a German Olympic medalist in rowing.

Life

Rulffs was already active as a student rowers. From his class teacher and later coach Karl Adam he was discovered for the Ratzeburg RC. He was one of the most versatile rower and could both Skull and Sweep Rowing. Rulffs was seven times German champion and twice European champion: 1958 won in Poznan Hans Lenk, power Schepke, Manfred Rulffs and Karl -Heinz Hopp in the coxless four in 1959 won the eight Ratzeburg in Macon.

With the Summer Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 Rulffs won the gold medal as a member of the Germany - rowing eight. In the occupation of Hans Lenk, Klaus Bittner, Karl -Heinz Hopp, Karl- Heinrich von GRODDECK, power Schepke, Frank Schepke, Walter Schroeder, Manfred Rulffs ( as a hitter ) and helmsman Willi Padge went aft together for three years and remained at large events undefeated.

After his playing career, he worked as a middle school teacher in Preetz. 1965 brought him Karl Adam after the opening of the rudder Academy in Ratzeburg, initially as his assistant. In 1968 Rulffs the care of the Germany - rowing eight and remained national coach until 1981. 1981, he returned to the teaching profession.

Rulffs died after a long illness at the age of 71 years. He was the first out of the team, which in 1960 could break the Olympic winning streak of the United States. Barely four weeks after he died on 12 February 2007 Karl -Heinz Hopp.
