Manfred Schumann

Manfred Schumann ( born February 7, 1951 in Hannover ) is a former German track and field athlete and bobsledder. Manfred Schumann is one of the few German athletes who participated at both Olympic Games and the Olympic Winter Games. He won two Olympic medals in bobsleigh and a world title and was several times German champion.

Manfred Schumann began athletics at TuS Wunstorf and has been for the club German youth champion in 1967 and 1968, he launched in 1971 and 1972 for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, was from 1973 to 1977 at USC Mainz and then returned to his hometown Wunstorf. As Bobsportler he stepped to the SV Ohlstadt. At a height of 1.86 m his competition weight was 86 kg.

Athletics

Schumann won a bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meters relay in which Schumann was the first runner and Franz -Peter Hofmeister the final runner at the Junior European Championships in 1970. In 1971, he stepped up to the European Championships in Helsinki in the 110- meter hurdles, and came up in the intermediate run. In the Indoor Athletics Championships 1972 in Grenoble he won the 50m hurdles second place behind the Frenchman Guy Drut. In Munich at the 1972 Summer Olympics Schumann already retired from the lead. At the 1977 European Indoor Championships in San Sebastian Schumann occupied again in fifth in the hurdles.

After he had become a third party in 1970 at the German Championships in the 110- meter hurdles, Schumann won in 1971 and 1974 titles, 1972, he again took the third place. In the hall Schumann was four times German champion in the hurdles, namely from 1972 to 1974 and then again in 1977. 1972 and 1973 Schumann was also runner-up in the hall Sprint. During his athletic career, Schumann had four Achilles tendon ruptures ( 1975 twice, 1977 and 1979), the far threw him back every time in his preparations. With the fourth hamstring tear he officially ended his career in 1979 as an athlete. He joined a substitute, but again on the track to support his club MTV Mr. Hausen in the state championships in the all around 1982 in Hanover. After a good first day Schumann was, despite weak performance in the 1500 meter race, national champion of Lower Saxony in the decathlon. His best times exceed 100 meters 10.2 s and 110 -meter hurdles 13.6 s

Bobs

In the early 1970s attempted to gain some Bobnationen athletes for the Bobsleigh in the Federal Republic of Germany Manfred Schumann belonged to the pioneers.

In 1974 he won at the Bob World Cup title in the four-man event along with the pilot Wolfgang Zimmerer, Peter Utzschneider and Albert Wurzer. When Bobeuropameisterschaft 1976 in St. Moritz won two bobs from the Federal Republic. The title was won Stefan Gaisreiter before Wolfgang Zimmerer, Peter Utzschneider, Bodo Bittner and Manfred Schumann, bronze went to Erich Schärer from Switzerland. At the Olympic Winter Games in 1976 Manfred Schumann won as a brakeman by Wolfgang Zimmerer silver in two-man behind Meinhard takers and Bernhard Germeshausen. In the four-man won carpenters, Utzschneider, Bittner and Schumann bronze behind the Meinhard takers controlled GDR Bob and behind Erich Schärer.

When Bob World Cup in 1977 as brakeman Schumann won by Stefan Gaisreiter bronze behind the Swiss Bobs of Hans and Fritz Hiltebrand Lüdi. In 1979 he won silver behind Gaisreiter together with Erich Schärer and Joseph Benz, with Schumann injured in the third round and the fourth round could not start for him jumped Fritz Ohlwärter.

Schumann was 1974 and 1977 German champions in two-man, 1978 and 1979 in the four-man event.
