Manfred Sommer

Manfred Sommer ( born May 27, 1933, San Sebastian, † October 3, 2007 in Galifa ) was a Spanish comic book artist, writer and illustrator who was known primarily for his adventure series Frank Cappa.

Life and work

Summer was born the son of a German father and an Andalusian mother in the Spanish Basque country, grew up in Barcelona and immigrated at age 21 to France. There and in Belgium, he was a professional sign training. His main influences are, however, to look at Milton Caniff, Frank Robbins and later especially Hugo Pratt.

He worked in several European countries, including three years as a cartoon filmmaker in France, and especially as a painter and book illustrator.

1979 summer came back to Spain, and published his first comic book, the short story Karelia. To great success in 1981, the series Frank Cappa, in which he tells the tale of a war correspondent. He joined the Spanish comic artists Jordi Bernet, Antonio Segura, Leopold Sánchez and José Ortiz and was part of the ambitious but short-lived initiative Metropol, which published three magazines in the early 80s. The works of El Lobo Solimento and Pollux were adjusted after each album.

Despite the recognition by readers and critics Manfred Sommer has created no other comics from the 90s.
