Mangualde is a city and county ( concelho ) in Portugal with 9385 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

Dolmens and other finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. Chief Viriathus operated here in his successful fight the Lusitanians against the Romans. After his assassination 139 BC Decimus Brutus conquered these lands for the Romans. Roman roads ran here, especially the Strait of Bracara Augusta (Braga ) to Emerita Augusta (Mérida ). The extraction of minerals in mines operated by the Romans.

After the invasion of the Visigoths in the 5th century AD, the Moors conquered in the 8th century, the region of today Mangualde. They built from the local fort and named the place after her governor Zurara or Azurara. During the Reconquista conquered Ferdinand I ( Leon ) the place in 1058 from the Arabs.

First of town rights in 1102, of D.Teresa and her son D.Afonso Henriques, who later became the first king of the country Azurara. First city rights since 1140 the independent Kingdom of Portugal was the site in 1217 by King D.Afonso II, Manuel I. confirmed in the course of its administrative reform in 1514.

During the 17th century Azurara experienced some development after the family Paes do Amaral settled here with a palace and subsequently resulted in a number of public facilities, including jurisdiction, market and church buildings and auxiliary facilities. In the 19th century the place now called Mangualde took another upswing, especially after the connection to the newly constructed road to Guarda. The origin of the present name after the disappearance of the variants of the original Arabic name Azurara is unclear.

In 1986, the former Vila ( town ) Mangualde the Cidade (City) has been charged.

Culture and sights

Economy

In Mangualde is the Portuguese production plant of PSA Peugeot Citroën, Citroën under the name Lusitania SA. Here the last Citroën 2CV (as the duck known ) On July 27, 1990 produced. At other factories metal processing industry, textile and footwear industry, a fertilizer factory of the group CUF ( Companhia União Fabril ), logistics companies, furniture manufacturing and wooden and stone processing are mentioned.
