Manhattan Transfer (PRR station)

From 1910 to 1937 Manhattan Transfer was a passenger train station in Harrison, New Jersey (USA), between Newark and Jersey City. He lay on the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR ), nowadays the so-called North - East corridor ( Northeast Corridor ) of the U.S. rail company Amtrak. The station consisted of two Umsteigebahnsteigen, one on each side of the PRR - line. The special feature was that the station was only accessible by train. Another approach did not exist.

On November 27, 1910, the station was opened. Originally it was used for the transfer of passengers toward Pennsylvania Station ( Penn Station) in Manhattan. The travelers could of vapor to move electrically powered trains, which then drove through the PRR tunnel to Penn Station.

When the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad (H & M) ( now Port Authority Trans -Hudson PATH) was opened, one shifted Manhattan Transfer on either side of another PRR - line rail track. By switching from PRR to H & M trains the lower part of Manhattan could be linked to the New York line of the PRR ( Lower Manhattan ). This extension was opened on 1 October 1911.

After laying the H & M line on June 20, 1937 the new Pennsylvania Station in Newark Manhattan Transfer was closed. Passengers rise since then to Newark to get to Manhattan.
