Maniace

Maniace is a city in the Province of Catania in the Italian region Sicily, with 3669 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Maniace is located 67 km northwest of Catania on the northwestern slopes of Mount Etna. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and livestock.

The neighboring municipalities are Bronte, Cesarò (ME) and Longi (ME).

History

Was named the place after Georgios Maniakes, the temporarily liberated from the Arabs in 1038 from parts of Sicily. 1174 was founded here by Marguerite de Navarre, the Abbey of Santa Maria di Maniace, on the site of a well already abandoned Greek monastery. In the context of this abbey developed the place. From 1799 to the family of Admiral Nelson lived here. Until 1981 Maniace was a district of Bronte.
