Manifesto: Together Facing the New Totalitarianism

The Manifesto of the 12 is a manifesto of twelve mainly derived from the Islamic culture intellectuals, aimed against Islamism as a " new global totalitarian threat " and on 1 March 2006 in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in response to the controversy over the Mohammed cartoons was published. Among the most prominent signatories include Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the British-Indian author Salman Rushdie and the French journalist Bernard- Henri Lévy.

The twelve signatories of the manifesto are:

  • Caroline Fourest, French writer, journalist and feminist
  • Bernard- Henri Lévy, French philosopher and journalist
  • Irshad Manji, Canadian author, journalist and feminist Ugandan origin
  • Mehdi Mozaffari, professor of political science in Denmark
  • Maryam Namazie, Iranian communist in exile in Britain
  • Taslima Nasreen, Bangladeshi writer and doctor
  • Salman Rushdie, British writer of Indian origin
  • Antoine Sfeir, Lebanese writer living in France, a political scientist and journalist
  • Philippe Val, editor in chief of the magazine Charlie Hebdo, which published the manifesto
  • Ibn Warraq ( a pseudonym ), Indian writer and critic of Islam
