Manila Accord

The Manila Agreement was signed on July 31, 1963 on the initiative of Diosdado Macapagal of the Federation of Malaya, the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of the Philippines, after a meeting from 7 to June 11, 1963 in Manila.

These three countries have agreed that they comply with the wishes of the people of Sabah ( North Borneo) and Sarawak, the extent consistent with the provisions of resolution 1541 (XV ), the UN General Assembly tolerated. In the opinion of the Secretary General of the UN, this agreement was necessary to ensure, through a new approach to the full observance of the principle of self-determination (principle 9). The agreement should ensure that in Sabah and Sarawak free elections could be carried out.

The agreement includes several Manila- declarations between the Republic of the Philippines, the Federation of Malaya and the Republic of Indonesia as well as a Joint Declaration (Joint Statement ) of these three states.
