Manitowoc is a city ( with a status of "City" ) and the administrative seat of Manitowoc County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. In 2010, Manitowoc had 33 736 inhabitants.

Geography and transport

Manitowoc is located at 44 ° 5'47 " north latitude and 87 ° 40'30 " west longitude and extending over 44.03 km ², spread over 43.26 km ² land and 0.77 km ² water surface.

In downtown Mantowoc of U.S. Highway 10, U.S. Highway 151 and the Wisconsin Highway 42 meet together. On the western edge of the city of Green Bay in the north to Milwaukee leading the south Interstate 43 runs

The town lies at the mouth of the Manitowoc River into Lake Michigan. Across the lake is a 100 km long car-ferry to Ludington in Michigan. From there, the Highway 10 then continues in an easterly direction.

Public transport is operated since 1978 by the jointly established with the neighboring town of Two Rivers Company Maritime Metro Transit. MMT currently has a fleet of 12 buses, which travel on 8 lines 40 stops.

Economy

The Manitowoc Company grew out of the existing one in the city 's shipbuilding industry. Meanwhile, the company is also active in other areas, such as in engineering. The Bio- Blend Fuels, a biodiesel producer, is based in Manitowoc. The oldest U.S. manufacturer of private yachts, the Burger Boat Company also has its headquarters in Manitowoc and annually yachts finished 2-3.

Attractions

The Rahr West Art Museum is housed in a building dating from the 19th century which is located near the city center. It was donated by the family Rahr as a municipal arts center in 1941. The Museum now has paintings and sculptures dating from the 15th to the 21st century as well as a Victorian home furnishings completely preserved.

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum was founded in 1970. It emerged from the exhibition of decommissioned submarine USS Cobia, to which has become one of the largest naval museums of the Midwest formed. It documents the maritime tradition of the region in which in the past almost all types of vessels ( even 28 submarines during the Second World War ) were built.
