Mankato is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, with around 37,800 inhabitants. It is the county seat of Blue Earth County.

Geography

Mankato is located approximately 100 kilometers southwest of the Twin Cities and the Minnesota River and its tributary the Blue Earth River, which flows near Mankato in the Minnesota River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 39.9 km ². It is the administrative seat of Blue Earth County, a small portion is located in the adjacent Nicollet County.

History

Mankato was founded in 1852. The name comes from the Dakota, where mahkato " blue - green earth " is, which is due to the blue clay in the region. From a misspelling of an official in Mankato current name originated.
