Mannosamine is a hexosamines derivative of mannose.

In its N -acetyl form ( N- acetyl-D- mannosamine ), it is a component of neuraminic acids, glycolipids, and glycoproteins. D- mannosamine hydrochloride is an important monosaccharide starting material for a number of biologically functional derivatives thereof. It is used for the synthesis of N- Propanoylmannosamin and sialic acids and is also an intermediate for a variety of biologically active compounds and pharmaceuticals which are derived from carbohydrates.
