Mannose phosphate isomerase

The mannose-6 -phosphate isomerase (PMI), the enzyme which catalyzes the mutual rearrangement of fructose -6-phosphate to mannose 6 -phosphate and vice versa. All organisms except the Archaea possess the enzyme. For eukaryotes, the reaction is important for the biosynthesis of GDP- mannose and the glycans. In bacteria, it is part of Mannosestoffwechsels. PMI is localized in the cytosol. In human PMI is produced in all tissue types, especially in the brain, heart and muscles. Mutations in the MPI gene can lead to rare hereditary Glykosylierungsdefekt type 1B ( CDG1B ).

Catalyzed reaction

β -D-fructose -6-phosphate and β -D -mannose -6-phosphate may overlap.
