Manokwari

Manokwari is with 130,000 inhabitants and one of the most important cities of West Papua. It is the capital of the province of Irian Jaya Barat (West Papua half ) and the only non -dominated Indonesian transmigrants city of West Papua.

The city is situated on the northern Pacific coast to the east of the Vogelkop Peninsula. It is the administrative and commercial center and has an airport and a harbor. The city was one of the first Dutch offices in New Guinea in the 19th century. 1855 landed the German missionaries Carl Wilhelm Ottow and Johann Gottlob Geissler on the nearby island of Mansinam and started from here, to evangelize the Papua. 1898 district administration was established. During World War II the city was occupied by the Japanese in 1942 and recaptured in 1944 by the Americans. Then she shared the story of West Papua.
