Manon Lescaut is an opera in four acts by Giacomo Puccini, which was premiered in 1893 in Turin. In the libretto, several authors were involved: Ruggiero Leoncavallo, Marco Praga, Domenico Oliva, Luigi Illica, Giuseppe Giacosa, Giulio Ricordi and Giuseppe Adami. The plot is based on the novel Histoire du Chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by Abbé Prévost.

Action

On the square in front of the Paris Post in Amiens a crowd waiting for the mail coach from Arras. The cheerful crowd mocked the student Des Grieux as clueless in matters of love, this then brings a serenade. With the stagecoach hit a Manon Lescaut, her brother, who will take them at the behest of his father in a monastery, and the tax farmers Geronte de Ravoir. Des Grieux fall in love at first sight with her, she talks to and learns of her planned future. He persuades her to meet up with him again. Geronte de Ravoir however, also has his eye on Manon and already led the host with money to provide a coach. Edmondo, a fellow with Des Grieux student has overheard and reported to trade Des Grieux it. This can persuade to the evening meetings Manon to flee with him. Both disappear in the rented carriage of Geronte while Geronte and the drunken Lescaut be taunted by the crowd.

Act 2

After Manon short time lived with the penniless Des Grieux in Paris, her brother brought her to Geronte. This has showered with gifts and can admire their beauty from his friends. A small dance performance follows. When the company is gone and Manon is preparing to follow them, Des Grieux enters, has brought the Lescaut, Manon and throws herself into his arms. Act 3

Manon has been condemned to exile in the American penal colony. Although all attempts Des Grieux and Lescaut failed, they make a last attempt to free them. The prank fails, however. Manon is passed on to the ship that will take them to America. The desperate Des Grieux may eventually persuade the captain to take him.

4 Lift

After Des Grieux mistakenly believes to have killed a rival in a duel (which is described in Abbé Prévost 's novel, but not in the opera ), both escape and are now in the desert. Manon is becoming weaker and sends Des Grieux, to fetch water. However, he comes back with empty hands. Manon insists - already completely exhausted - their eternal love for Des Grieux and dies in his arms.
